Dear Prospective Student:

We are delighted that you are considering the Evangelical Seminary of West Africa (ESWA) for your ministry training. Answering God’s call to serve in vocational ministry is a courageous decision that merits the best training possible in terms of biblical and theological knowledge, ministry skills, and growth in Christ-like character.

ESWA began offering classes in September 2019 as the fulfillment of the vision and hard work of many to create a thoroughly evangelical, interdenominational graduate-level seminary in Liberia. In November 2024 we relocated to our new campus with two beautiful new buildings (so far!) on the ELWA Compound. On June 14, 2025, we celebrated our third Commencement Exercise. We now have 17 Master of Divinity degree holders whom God is using significantly.

ESWA is committed to providing the very best evangelical theological training for a lifetime of growth, study, and ministry. We seek to glorify Jesus Christ by training godly servant-leaders to serve the Church, fulfill the Great Commission, and transform the world.
God has blessed us to be a blessing to others. We have excellent new buildings, including our research center which houses what we believe to be the most outstanding theological library in Liberia. In addition to our resident faculty, we have many world-class adjunct faculty from the United States and elsewhere who travel to ESWA to teach intensive block courses for us. Classes in spiritual formation, spiritual formation small groups, chapel services, and companionship with others in the ESWA community provide a wonderful environment for personal growth.

If the Lord leads you to study at ESWA, we will facilitate the Holy Spirit’s work in transforming you into a particular kind of person: someone who loves and honors God, better understands God’s Word and theology, has greater skill in communicating God’s Word and otherwise ministering to and with others, and increasingly demonstrates the fruit of Christ-like character. You will be better prepared to serve God faithfully and effectively in your context.

If you come to ESWA, be prepared to study and work hard. But you will never regret investing in your own equipping for ministry, and you will be well-prepared to light your world with the light of God’s Word!

Blessings in Christ,

Gary McKnight, PhD, DMin
